CREATING
BONSAI With David Platt The
origins of bonsai, and some of the common Japanese styles, will be briefly
introduced with examples of specimen trees.
Thereafter, the basic techniques of pruning, wiring and root maintenance
will be demonstrated on a partially developed tree.
Potential bonsai material(Larch saplings) will be provided on the day,
but if you have an alternative tree of your own you are
welcome to bring it along to work on.
Everyone will have an opportunity to select a style and begin
the transformation of the tree under guidance.
Some tools will be provided but please
bring a pair of stout scissors /secateurs (or both).
The last stages allow for personal variations and
we will discuss these at the time.
Some aftercare advice will be provided in a hand-out
together with a list of useful books and web addresses.
Everyone can work at their own chosen pace;
there is a relaxing and meditative component to developing a bonsai.
It is one of those rare situations where science ~ good horticultural
practice,
and art ~the aesthetic qualities of the tree in 10 years time,
come together.
